The origins and significance of playing cards in different countries
2025-02-19
Playing cards originated in China, appearing as early as the Zhou dynasty; "cutting leaves to guide" was a game played using leaves. Later, it was called "Ye Xi", clearly expressing this. We don't know when it was replaced by playing cards. Since I live in a mountainous area, this simple game of playing with leaves still existed in my youth, which must be a continuation of ancient entertainment wisdom.
The formation of playing cards is said to have been invented by Europeans, including the French, Italians, Belgians, and Swiss. There are different reasons for this.
The French interpreted the four suits as spears, squares, cloves, and hearts.
The Germans interpreted the four suits as leaves, bells, acorns, and hearts.
The Italians interpreted the four suits as swords, coins, clubs, and cups.
The Swiss interpreted the four suits as acorns, bells, flowers, and shields.
The British interpreted the four suits as spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts.
